About Walpole-Nornalup National Park

Walpole-Nornalup National Park, located in the southwest region of Western Australia, protects a striking landscape characterized by some of the tallest and oldest karri trees in the world, alongside lush river valleys and rugged coastal cliffs. Spanning approximately 15,200 hectares, the park forms part of the larger Walpole Wilderness Area, one of Australia's significant conservation reserves. The park's geography includes the confluence of the Frankland and Deep Rivers, offering dramatic water views and tranquil settings. Its temperate climate and rich soils support a temperate rainforest ecosystem dominated by towering karri (Eucalyptus diversicolor) and tingle trees, which can reach heights of over 75 meters. These forests create a unique habitat that supports diverse species such as the western ringtail possum, rare birds, and an abundance of native flora. Historically, the area is significant to the indigenous Noongar people, who have cultural ties to the land. Visitors to the park enjoy numerous outdoor activities, including walking through the famous Tree Top Walk—a 600-meter elevated walkway offering panoramic canopy views—and hiking trails that traverse valleys, riversides, and coastal outlooks. Wildlife watching is popular, especially birding and spotting native mammals. The park also offers opportunities for camping, picnicking, and photography. Notable landmarks include the Valley of the Giants, which features ancient trees and a suspended canopy walkway, and the tranquil Nornalup Inlet known for its scenic beauty. Walpole-Nornalup National Park is renowned for its combination of natural grandeur and easily accessible facilities, making it appealing for both day visitors and multi-day adventurers.
